Oh pinterest how I love you. I found this artwork and immediately knew I wanted to try it out. I had already thought of the perfect place for it too – right above our bed. Here’s how you do it…
1) Paint whole canvas in different colors
2) Cut strips of painter’s tape of the same size
3) Tape them onto the canvas in a herringbone pattern leaving some out
4) Spray paint whole canvas in white.
5) Finish painting edges of canvas
That’s it! I swear you don’t have to be an artist to do this. The hardest part is cutting the strips of tape just because it’s time-consuming. Here’s the pinterest version… Yeah I know it’s better than mine haha but I’m still happy with how it turned out! I like how it looks with my pillow shams :).

Thanks Madeline! Just what I paid for the canvas (around $25 I think) and painter’s tape which was a couple dollars. I already had paint 🙂

What kind of paint did you use on yours?

Can you give any more details on how you painted the canvas and what colors/brushes you used? Also, how big were the canvases and tape strips? I’m a pretty low-level crafter, so any more information would be really helpful! Thanks, and I can’t wait to try it!
Hi Liz, Honestly I didn’t have a specific technique when painting the canvases – my goal was just to cover the canvas with lots of different colors. I used a lot of dry brush in order to blend the colors together. The canvas size was 18×18 and the tape strips were around 4-5 inches long. Good luck with yours!

Can you give better step by step instructions? I don’t understand how you got this by painting the whole canvas first. Did you place the painters tape over the paint in rectangles and then spray paint it?

Hi Taylor my favorite colors of paint to use are Primary Red, Cadmium Red, Primary Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Primary Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, and Ivory Black. Most all the colors you see have been mixed using these paints. Hope that helps!

The pinterest version looks like its framed… Did u frame yours/do you recommend it?
Hi Christa – I did not frame mine since I painted it on canvas. I just painted the edges of the canvas so it looked more finished. You could frame it if you wanted, I just didn’t want to spend the $$ on a frame 😉

Whoa! I just recently joined pinterest, and have fallen into the best DIY dream ever 🙂 I have already started a few projects, but this is a Masterpiece! And I agree with above, I like the brighter colors you chose & that you did 2 of them. I’m totally doing this when I have room to start another project, lol.

I was wondering what width tape did you use,because it looks smaller than typical size tape. If so where do you find it?
Hi Pam, I think the tape width was 1 inch and I used painter’s tape from an art supply store – try Hobby Lobby or Michael’s. Hope that helps!
