It seems I usually finish projects at the worst time. And of course since it’s now September, our patio is finally done. haha Either way, I’m obsessed with our new outdoor space.
Our existing deck looked pretty rough when we first bought the house. I imagine it’s been there since the house was built in 1971 and it looked like it! However, a whole new deck wasn’t in the budget. Enter paint. I had been seeing some cool painted patio floors lately so I got inspired to paint ours. And the good thing about an old deck is not being scared to try something bold. I decided to go with black and white stripes with a teal border to make it look like a rug. First my Dad pressure-washed it to make sure the paint would stick well. Then we used porch paint for the floor which seems to hold up really well. After the floor was done, D added some posts to either side of the deck so I could hang some lanterns and string lighting. I love how it adds to the whole ambiance at night. We got a solid deck stain that matched the existing color to paint the posts and the rest of the floor and sides. (I didn’t have paint the outside of the deck luckily.) And I decided to paint the bench black to go with the floor. We definitely owe a big thank you to my parents for helping with the hard labor stuff!
Lastly I made pillows with outdoor fabric and potted some plants for the space. D and I have been spending lots of nights out here since putting up the lights. We love we have a space to entertain too (at least for a couple weeks before the cold weather hits!)

I love the way it turned out. I am obsessed with that teal lantern! I dream of having an outdoor space with string lighting someday…
Thank you Carrie! We got the lanterns on sale at Target for 10/each. I saw tonight that our Target still has some!
love it! and I love that it was a family project! perfect!
Here again,
You done a project that we so desperately need to do! I love the idea of just painting. We had thought about using Restore but I’m still not sure about that product. I’m very comfortable with paint however. Beautiful job. I’m so inspired and will be showing my husband. I’ve already pressure washed and we need to do this before leaves start falling.
I seriously love this. The monochromatic paint on the deck is so great against the pops of color you chose. The aqua works so well but is so unexpected; everything goes together perfectly. Your flowers even add to the joy of the color scheme. You have such a great, fun eye for detail. Of course I melted like butter when I saw your tiny chair for Jack. I so need to get one for little Emmett. We have a traditional (read: boring) set up right now on the patio, but we have a chimenea and I am stoked to start using it in the coming fall weeks.
I love everything you’ve done… Perfect!! Could you please tell me the color name and brand of the red paint on your homes exterior? We are looking for this exact color to paint our new little house.
Thanks!!
Jackie
Thank you Jackie! Unfortunately I have no idea what color or brand our exterior paint color is haha. It was painted that color when we moved in and they didn’t give us any paint to do touch ups. :/ In real life it is a dark burnt red. Sorry I can’t help more!
